My grandfather introduced me to Boyd Raeburn's music when I was listening mostly to the Beach Boys and Four Seasons. Like another swing-era dance band leader, Claude Thornhill, Raeburn started out leading a sweet-sounding band but was strongly influenced by the boppers of the early-mid 40s, and turned in that direction. Unlike Thornhill (who helped jumpstart the careers of Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan, among others) Raeburn faded back into obscurity.
