Click the arrow to hear a soundclip. My grandfather introduced me to Boyd Raeburn's music when I was listening mostly to the Beach Boys and Four Seasons.
Like another swing-era dance band leader, Claude Thornhill, Raeburn started out
leading a sweet-sounding band but was strongly influenced by the boppers of the early-mid 40s,
and turned in that direction. Unlike Thornhill (who helped jumpstart the careers of Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan, among others) Raeburn faded back into obscurity. More info on Boyd Raeburn. |
